2002 Wedding Photojournalist Association Photography Contest:

2002 WPJA Kids / Children

FIRST PLACE - Daniel Sheehan [more]

Photo © 2002 by Daniel Sheehan

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

How can you not love this winner. it's a kid being.....a kid. Mischievous, funny, cute. One is sucked into those adorable eyes. Nice use of shallow depth of field to get rid of background.

SECOND PLACE - Daniel Sheehan [more]

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Second place is another nice image of two girls. The moment was not ruined with flash. Beautiful available light.

THIRD PLACE - Wes Pope [more]

Photo © 2002 by Wes Pope

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The third place image showed a nice perspective from the child's point of view and it was great to see a photographer looking for the not so obvious photo. Usually we see bride's reflected--this time it's a little flower girl watching. Cropping might have helped this image.

CLOSE BEHIND THIRD PLACE - Shawn Holes [more]

Photo © 2002 by Shawn Holes

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Shaun Holes honorable mention photo was so close. It was a nice situation, had all the components of a great image but they weren't all firing at the same time. The moment could have been helped by cropping or backing off of the situation, not sure which.

OVERALL CATEGORY COMMENTS:

When going to a wedding, children add fun and spontaneity to the event. Given the range of emotions that children show at weddings, we wanted to see more entries that celebrated their intrinsic spontaneous nature. The first and second place images showed children doing what they do best, being open, loving and curious. Nice emotion. Clean images.
