PLACE - Michael Leslie [more]

JUDGE'S
COMMENTS:
It was difficult deciding the order of the images but in the end
we went with Michael Leslie's image of the bridesmaid helping
the bride. The image has a regal feel to it and the use of light
gives the photograph a timeless elegance. It is a beautiful combination
of quiet, composition and light. One is tempted to say that it's
the soft light coming from those two lamps that make this picture
but in reality it's the framing. The blurry edge of the door frame
creates a buffer between photographer and subjects. It's this
distance that makes the photo feel like it's not an intrusion.

JUDGE'S
COMMENTS:
This
photo is wonderful!! No caption needed. Once again, a storytelling
moment, not intruded upon. Very delicate. It's just a wonderful
real moment that can't be staged.
THIRD
PLACE - Daniel Sheehan [more]

JUDGE'S
COMMENTS:
Third
place is a quiet image of friends. We loved the serenity and pride
of the groom. Third place continues the trend here: a nice, quiet
moment without intrusion. Daniel Sheehan left it loose to leave
the context. Too often we see wedding photography that is so tight
that one loses the sense of place.
OVERALL
CATEGORY COMMENTS:
Getting ready photos often provide the most moments for journalistic
coverage. We wished we had seen more images, but what was entered
was very strong. This was the best category of entries and it
was tough deciding the order of the winners.
The winning images from this category were true storytellers.
Each photograph gave us a sense of knowing a little about the
person, a little bit into what makes them tick. Each winning entry
had a grace and delicacy.
