2004 Wedding Photojournalist Association Photography Contest:

WPJA Award Winning Wedding Photography 'DETAILS':

FIRST PLACE - John Hong / Washington

15 Points, a trophy and $228.00 Cash

Photo © 2004 by John Hong

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A far from cliché detail. Light and colorful, whimsical and storytelling all at once.

Beautiful backlighting and pastel colors- has an ethereal feel to it.

SECOND PLACE - Melissa Bonvini / Maine

10 Points, a trophy and $152.00 Cash

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Repeated pattern of arms and fabric make for a striking parallelism. It’s an image all about color and composition abstracted from a much bigger scene.

THIRD PLACE (tie) - Huy Nguyen / Texas

1.25 Points and $19.00 Cash

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Feet walk across a carpet and the details tells much about the East Indian, likely, wedding. A small ceramic elephant is in the background.

THIRD PLACE (tie) - Victor Junco / Florida

1.25 Points and $19.00 Cash

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Artistic and executed beautifully. Big kudos to the photographer for doing
something unexpected.

THIRD PLACE (tie) - Cameron Gillie / Louisiana

1.25 Points and $19.00 Cash

Photo © 2004 by Cameron Gillie

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Truly a cliché, but the composition, tight enough to be clean while loose enough to see all the action, really makes it sing. Needless to say, the light is perfect as well.

Loved all of the movement of the hands relating to the patterns of the ribbons.

THIRD PLACE (tie) - Richard Nowitz / Maryland

1.25 Points and $19.00 Cash

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The composition and lighting, the flower and the delicate way the hand holds the gown make this a wonderfully sensual moment. It's just simply a beautiful moment.

SEVENTH PLACE - Scott Schoeggl / Washington

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A small piece is missing from the elegant cake. A simple detail, well focused showing just enough of the cake and not all of it.

An all-time cliché, but so nicely composed and exposed. I feel like I could eat the cake.

EIGHTH PLACE - Richard Esposito / Connecticut

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Simple, strong in its softness... the lips and the buttons on the vest... the shadow... all make for a very beautiful and elegant portrait.

NINTH PLACE - Anne Marie McLaughlin / New Jersey

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Not sure this happens every day.

TENTH PLACE (tie) - Cameron Gillie / Louisiana

Photo © 2004 by Cameron Gillie

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

All that makeup for just one face. It’s a fairly monochromatic image that says much about bringing an image of beauty forward.

TENTH PLACE (tie) - Matt McGraw / North Carolina

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

So cute! completely unexpected.

TENTH PLACE (tie) - Chris Parker / Michigan

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Delicate, soft, barely touching yet a grasp that will last forever. Strong lines, wonderful contrast in black and white. A wonderful memento.
