JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Terrific angle and composition with the veil. The low angle makes the image work.

Automatic winner. Wonderfully creative use of the veil. Beautiful lines contrast, and composition. One of the best pictures of the competition.

A strong graphic image with style. Clever use of the veil.

Smart low angle accentuating the contrast between the white veil and the dark background.

Elegant. nice use of lighting and use of lines.

Wonderful mood created by dark hues, strong angles and film noir light.

A good, clean graphic image that is light and airy.

Love the visual echo between the design on the dress and the trees in the background.

Loved her expression and use of rule of thirds. Nice that the photographer backed up and showed more background thanmost of the entries.

I love the inclusion of the juke box. The dark background adds to the almost lonely feel to the photo. Very different.

Timeless feel with elegant lighting and beautiful color. Image is very soft and peaceful.


JUDGES FOR THIS WPJA CONTEST:

1. Anne Ryan was a staff photographers for USA Today for ten years covering all types of assignments including four trips to the Olympic Games. She has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize by both the Sun-Sentinel and USA Today.  She has also received numerous photojournalism awards in the Atlanta Seminar, Southern Short Course and a First Place in the Sports Feature category in POY.

2. Stephanie Grace Lim (San Jose Mercury News - CA), has won acclaim from the Society of News Design, National Press Photographers Association, Associated Press, National Headliners, & Nikon, as well as Michigan College Photographer of the Year and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Her work has been featured in the illustrious publications of Life, People, Billboard, Photographer’s Forum, and Print Magazine.


3. Matt McClain (Ventura County Star - CA)
Graduate of Indiana University 1998
2003 NPPA Region 10 Still Photographer of the Year.
2002 NPPA Region 10 Still Photographer of the Year.
2001 NPPA Region 10 Still Photographer of the Year.
Matt has taught at Brooks Institute of Photography (at the new campus for the photojournalism department in Ventura).

4. Mark Mirko (The Hartford Courant - CT)
Presently completing a Knight Fellowship at Ohio University. will be returning to the Hartford Courant in June, 2004.
2002 NPPA Region 1 Still Photographer of the Year.
Worked as a Staff Photographer at The Palm Beach Post from 1992-2000.
In 1994 Mark was the Region 6 NPPA POY.
In 1992 a team entry of the Post's Photographic coverage of Hurricane Andrew's devastation was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
