2003 Wedding Photojournalist Association Photography Contest:

2003
WPJA Bride AND Groom Portrait:

FIRST PLACE - Pam Hults / Louisiana

Photo © 2003 by Pam Hults

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A perfect scene for a wedding portrait. The photographer used the scene well - choosing to be a good distance from the subjects encompass the surroundings. The photo has great tonal qualities and the composition is flawless right down to the placement of the couple’s head in a location that gives them separation from the background.

Classic, timeless.

The nice composition and repetition of the columns makes this image special. The photographer also was careful to put the couple’s heads in front of the white column so they would not be cluttered by the background.

SECOND PLACE - David Gonzales / Wyoming

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The unusual setting and nice light made this image stand out. The blowing veil also helps this image become more memorable.

THIRD PLACE - Joe Milton / Oregon

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The great body language and faces made this photo jump to the top five. The tonal range also helped this black and white image.

You can almost hear the bride.

THIRD PLACE - Alicia Wagner Calzada / Texas

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Good use of what light there was in this otherwise dark scene. The couple stand out well is this moody image.

The sparse and directionally beautiful lighting gave this photo an unusual look. The couple look enveloped by the black surroundings. There is enough light to make them stand out.

5 - Christopher Record / North Carolina

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Great scene, good work to include as much of the string bulb lighting as possible – it really makes the photograph appealing to the eye.

7 - Gary Allen / North Carolina
