2003 Wedding Photojournalist Association Photography Contest:

2003
WPJA Award Winning Photography 'Getting Ready':

FIRST PLACE - Justin Ide / Massachusetts

Photo © 2003 by Justin Ide

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

This frame has great space. The sliver of open door and the eye connection between the people makes the picture. I get a sense of the bridesmaid trying to ensure the privacy of the bride until she is presented to the waiting audience.

This image was a well done subtle piece of story telling. The nice facial expression and composition makes this more interpretive picture have poetic beauty.

SECOND PLACE - David Beckstead / Arizona

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

This photo is quiet but has a great reflective mood. It’s a personal moment for the bride. The slight motion in the frame helps the picture out as well. Nicely done.

THIRD PLACE - Roman Grinev / Maryland

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Great use of the mirror. Great connection between the main subject and the bride’s reflection. Expressions are perfectly captured. A real moment.

4 - Eric Francis / Nebraska

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The photographer was able to look past the more obvious possibilities of the bride and groom and get a nice photograph that incorporated good use of space. The jacket hanging on the door adds another story telling layer.

4 - Eric Cable / Oregon

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The candid quality and gritty feel helped this image rise. The photographer gave essential space to the framing to help create an attractive mood.

4 - Greg Blomberg / Texas

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Elegant use of composition and beautiful edge lighting on the bride’s face. However, the photograph lacked the candid feel that the images judged above it had.

7 - Jennifer Wheeler / Minnesota

8 - David Murray / Maine

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Maybe it’s the choice of high camera angle and wide angle lens that create a feeling like we are looking in on a child getting ready for her rite of passage, but you can almost hear the bride’s quiet contemplations when looking at this photograph.

9 - Bill McCullough / Texas

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A gracefully lit, well-composed, perfectly timed moment.

10 - Pam Hults / Louisiana
